The Maritime Academy of Toledo is a Grade 5 -12 Middle/High School Diploma-based public school.  The Academy embraces the Marazon Approach which includes the following Best Practices in education:

  • Baseline assessments are completed at the beginning, middle, and end of each academic year to provide teachers the information they need to plan individually for each student.
  • Math, reading, writing, science, social studies, and electives incorporate individual students' emerging interests (hobbies, talents, and skills).
  • Weekly individualized plans are written for students based upon their interests and emerging needs (what they need to know next).
  • Weekly plans focus on the "whole child" across six domains:  affective, social, creative, cognitive, language, and physical development and the related 96 Target Objectives (visit www.marazon.com for more information about the Marazon Approach).
  • Classroom furniture is arranged in learning center or learning station environments.
  • Hands-on, interactive, life-based experiences are incorporated weekly to enhance student learning.
  • A strict Code of Conduct supports self-regulated learning and behavior.
  • A nautical rank and promotion system develops student leaders.
  • Title I teachers support math, reading, and writing.
  • Special education staff support students in inclusionary settings thus ensuring the least restrictive environments.
  • Large or whole group teaching is at a minimum each day, while small group and individualized instruction is maximized.
  • Peer tutoring is used to enhance student success.
  • Students maintain a Personal Portfolio each week.
  • Parent conferences are student-led with students referencing their portfolios.
