Position Title: CTE Maritime Transportation Teacher
Location: Toledo, Ohio

Position Summary
The CTE Maritime Transportation Teacher delivers instruction in maritime transport, navigation, seamanship, and related technical skills for high school students (grades 9–12). This role integrates classroom theory, simulation-based training, lab work, and industry-aligned practical experiences. The teacher will cultivate partnerships with local marine businesses, port authorities, and higher education institutions to support internships, certifications, and student pipelines into maritime careers.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Deliver curriculum in topics such as navigation, ship operations, maritime safety, seamanship, cargo handling, tides, currents, and logistics.
- Facilitate and supervise maritime simulator training (e.g. ship-handling, navigation scenarios) and incorporate simulations into instructional units.
- Lead hands-on maritime labs or field projects, such as small-boat operations, chart plotting, environmental sampling, port logistics, or vessel maintenance.
- Support students in obtaining industry-recognized credentials (e.g. STCW, safety, navigation officer licenses).
- Coordinate with industry partners (ports, shipyards, Coast Guard, maritime firms) to arrange guest lectures, field visits, internship placements, and mentorships.
- Maintain student records, performance data, and simulator logs; analyze outcomes to adjust instruction.
- Serve on the CTE advisory council to review program goals, update curriculum, and maintain alignment with industry standards.
- Assist with recruiting and outreach to attract students to the maritime pathway; present at parent nights, career fairs, and community events.
- Participate in professional development, CTE meetings, and Ohio’s career-technical education initiatives.
- Ensure laboratory and simulator areas comply with safety standards, maintain equipment, and manage consumables and supplies.
Desired Qualifications
Required:
- Demonstrated content knowledge in maritime transport, navigation, marine operations, or related field.
- Ability to teach and coach technical and theoretical maritime concepts.
- Strong communication, collaboration, and instructional design skills.
- Demonstrated willingness to partner with industry, community, and higher education institutions.
- Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Marine Transportation, Nautical Science, Maritime Studies, Engineering, or related field.
- Valid Ohio Career-Technical Workforce Development (CTWD) or Career-Technical Education (CTE) license with endorsement in a relevant pathway. The teacher must complete CTE-36 (work experience validation) and CTE-37 (program validation by district) if hired out of industry.
- Completion of at least one Ohio OAE (Ohio Assessments for Educators) examination: the professional knowledge (pedagogical) exam and the content exam aligned with the CTE area.
- Must satisfy Ohio BCI and FBI background checks.
- Proper licensure or certification per Ohio’s rules for CTE instruction (i.e. in good standing with the Ohio Department of Education).
Preferred:
- Master’s degree in Technical Education, Maritime Studies, Curriculum & Instruction, or related field.
- Prior teaching or training experience in CTE, technical education, or maritime fields
- Additional credentials in CTE instruction, adult learning, or curriculum design.
- Familiarity with Ohio’s CTE/CTWD systems, end-of-course exams, and program approval processes
- Prior completion of advanced professional development in maritime or transportation education.
- Professional maritime certifications or licensure (e.g. U.S. Coast Guard officer license, STCW credentials)
- Experience working with simulators or maritime lab equipment
- Experience facilitating internships or work-based learning in maritime sectors
Physical Demands
- Lab and simulation environments: standing, walking, bending, and positioning students during hands-on activities.
- Occasional lifting or moving of instructional equipment, tools, and teaching aids (up to 25-40 lbs).
- Frequent indoor/outdoor work (simulator labs, field trips, port or dockside visits).
- Prolonged use of computer systems, instruments, and monitoring of simulator panels.
- Ability to safely navigate vessel or dockside settings and adhere to safety protocols.
- Must supervise students in various environments, ensuring rigorous safety standards in maritime activities.

Position Title: Social Studies Teacher (grades 6-8 or 9-12)

Position Summary
The Social Studies Teacher will deliver engaging, standards-based instruction in U.S. history, world history, civics, geography, and economics to students (grades 6–8 or 9-12). This full-time position embeds maritime themes such as Great Lakes trade, port history, naval service, and environmental policy into rigorous, real-world learning experiences. The teacher will also collaborate with CTE teams to integrate social studies into TMAT’s maritime pathways and simulator experiences.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Design and teach courses aligned with the Ohio Learning Standards for social studies, including U.S. History, World History, Government, and Economics.
- Integrate maritime-related content: Great Lakes commerce and cultural history, maritime law, environmental policy, and port operations.
- Develop project–based learning units, for instance, mock legislative debates on maritime policy, mapping trade routes, or oral histories of port communities.
- Coordinate with CTE, STEM, and English teachers to ensure interdisciplinary learning, such as incorporating simulator exercises into civics lessons or reading technical maritime reports.
- Use formative and summative assessments, including simulations and policy portfolios, to track student progress and differentiate instruction.
- Advise or oversee student-led clubs (model UN, civic engagement, or “Maritime Heritage Club”) and lead field experiences to local historical sites or port facilities.
- Communicate with students, families, and school staff on academic progress, behavior, and pathway transitions.
- Maintain accurate records in the school’s systems; participate in department planning, professional learning communities, and advisory councils.
- Contribute to school-wide initiatives
Desired Qualifications
Required:
- Demonstrated knowledge of Ohio’s Learning Standards for Social Studies and the ability to design rigorous, standards-based lessons.
- Strong classroom management skills with a focus on building positive student relationships and fostering civic engagement.
- Ability to differentiate instruction to meet diverse learning needs, including advanced, struggling, and English Learner students.

- Bachelor’s degree in History, Social Studies Education, Political Science, or a related field.
- Completion of an Ohio-approved educator preparation program.
- Valid Ohio Adolescence to Young Adult (AYA) Integrated Social Studies (7–12) license, often requires:
- OAE: Assessment of Professional Knowledge - AYA (7–12) (pedagogy)
- OAE: Integrated Social Studies content assessment (025)
- Completion of Ohio BCI and FBI background checks as required by state law
- Must maintain compliance with all ODE licensure renewal requirements and remain in good standing as a properly certified educator under Ohio law.
Preferred:
- Experience teaching U.S. History, World History, Government, or Economics in an urban or diverse educational setting with a focus on interdisciplinary or experiential learning..
- Background or strong interest in maritime, environmental, or regional history, particularly the Great Lakes and Toledo’s port community.
- Familiarity with College Credit Plus (CCP), Advanced Placement (AP), or dual enrollment programs.
- Experience designing or facilitating interdisciplinary projects (e.g., linking history with science, environmental or maritime content, economics with trade simulations, or civics with environmental policy).
- Proficiency with educational technology tools such as interactive maps, Powerschool, GIS, online simulations, and learning management systems.
- Strong interest in community partnerships with museums, universities, port authorities, and veterans’/naval organizations.
- Master’s degree or advanced coursework in Social Studies Education, History, Political Science, or Curriculum & Instruction, or a related field.
Physical Demands

Position Summary
The Building Substitute Teacher at The Maritime Academy of Toledo serves as a consistent and reliable educator, providing daily instructional coverage and classroom support throughout the school year. Assigned exclusively to TMAT, this position ensures academic continuity, supports student learning across grade levels, and upholds the school’s mission to foster academic excellence and maritime leadership. The Building Substitute may lead classes in any subject, assist with intervention or enrichment, and collaborate with school staff to maintain a safe, structured, and engaging learning environment.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Provide daily classroom instruction based on lesson plans developed by the assigned teacher or department lead.
- Maintain classroom order and create a positive, respectful learning environment aligned with TMAT’s values and behavioral expectations.
- Supervise students in classrooms, hallways, lunch areas, and during special events as needed.
- Support academic and enrichment activities
- Assist with student interventions, small-group instruction, and learning support where directed.
- Collaborate with administrators, teachers, and support staff to promote consistency in instructional delivery and classroom management.
- Ensure all duties are carried out in compliance with school and Ohio Department of Education (ODE) policies.
- Other duties as assigned by the administration
Desired Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
- Valid Ohio Department of Education Substitute License (1-Year or 5-Year)
- Successful completion of Ohio BCI and FBI background checks.

- Dependable and flexible with assignments and student age levels.
Preferred:
- Prior experience teaching or substituting in a K–12 setting.
- Enrollment in or completion of an Ohio-approved teacher preparation program.
